Next up in the character reveals is Paris, Prince of Troy!
Paris was happily married to Oenone, raising their son Corythus in the mountains of Troy prior to the events that started the Trojan War. His life forever changed when three Goddesses- Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena- were fighting over a Golden Apple with 'To the Fairest' inscribed upon it. To settle the dispute, Zeus decreed that Paris would judge the fairest of the three, and therefore gift the apple to her. Each Goddess promised him a reward should he choose her, and Aphrodite's promise of the love of the most beautiful woman in the world (Helen of Sparta) proved most tempting.
Paris and Helen eloped against the wishes of both of their spouses, sparking war between Greece and Troy, and eventually leading to the collapse of Paris' home, and later his death. When he was struck by Greek arrows, he crawled home to his abandoned wife, Oenone, begging her to save his life with her powers of healing. Still reeling from his betrayal, she refused, and his life was forfeit.
Centuries later Paris has been reborn through the will of the same Goddess whom he decreed the fairest. He lives in Chicago, working as a DJ with no knowledge of his former life, until one day a strangely familiar woman finds him, claiming to be his long lost wife. Will his memories return? And will he accept the love he once cast aside?
What am I reading right now? 'Warrior Girl Unearthed' by Angeline Boulley.
I read Angeline Boulley's debut novel 'The Firekeeper's Daughter' two years ago and I still frequently think about it. It was enriching, moving, heartbreaking, and enthralling all at once. Plus, listening to the audiobook allowed me to be more immersed in the Anishinaabemowin language spoken by the narrator. Ever since I finished 'The Firekeeper's Daughter' I have wanted to read 'Warrior Girl Unearthed.' 'Warrior Girl Unearthed' takes place in the same universe and features many familiar characters, though it is not a direct sequel. I'm only about a third of the way through the book, but I am already engrossed in the story. Perry Firekeeper-Birch, the main character, is so fiery and passionate. I love her drive and her unique perspective. I am looking forward to seeing where the story takes her, though I am a little nervous as well. Boulley doesn't shy away from the dark parts of humanity, and her stories are heartbreakingly realistic. I highly recommend both 'The Firekeeper's Daughter' and 'Warrior Girl Unearthed.'
